Its future is very promising thanks to four factors: the expansion of the needs for network communication to most economic activities; the trend towards the integration of activities within organizations and between organizations; the huge increase in the supply of public data services; and the strong technological development that characterizes this domain, requiring constant updating.
In general, it occupies a strategic role within its organization, where it is responsible for the design of the network, for its operation, and for the permanent adaptation to technological progress. In small companies it tends to accumulate the functions of system manager. In large organizations, he tends to become a specialist in the sector in which he operates: banking, insurance, transport, communications, distribution, large industries, or central administration.
The functions of the network engineer may vary depending on whether you are responsible for designing a network or just managing it. The design engineer is sometimes called the network architect, who establishes the network architecture according to the specific needs of your organization. The engineer who manages the network is often called the network manager, and is responsible for its permanent smooth functioning, updating and security.
The strong integration of networks in the strategic development of organizations often requires the network engineer to be sensitive to the issues of management and strategic planning in organizations and to cultivate their human relationship skills.
